Description

This question was posed by Geof Syphers and Paul Ekins, and discussed at One Planet One Day on 3rd December 2008 by representatives from the Alastair Sawday Publishing, the American Council for Construction Education, bere:architects, BioRegional, Codding Enterprises, Crest Nicholson, Defra, Good Homes Alliance, FACIT, the Institute of Acoustics, Middlesbrough City Council, Palmer Research, SEEDA, Taylor Woodrow, the University of Bath, the University of Surrey and WYG Future.

Three key lessons:

  1. We have good, practical projects with a simple message – people don’t need to understand the full complexity, only that we have a strategy to achieve a genuinely sustainable outcome, a better future, a better quality of life;
  2. We can’t do everything on our scale – carbon emissions and ecosystem services need to be priced through trading mechanisms, quotas or taxes;
  3. We need to overcome cultures of secrecy, to promote the idea that putting resources into openly sharing information and educating others is not only a good thing but required if we’re to tip the balance towards a sustainable future.
